Key Problem
Since expanding, this small bakery has acquired more and more customers. As a result, the ordering system has suffered trying to keep up with custom orders, pre-orders, and regular shopfront sales. At times, this has left customers upset and employees struggling to pull strings together to appease them.
Key Business Implications
This business is a small batch bakery of 5 employees that transitioned from a farmer’s market stall to a quaint storefront. Moving into their second year of storefront business, the bakery has acquired regular customers as well as new ones, and they want to ensure they can maintain positive reviews from customers.
Objective: Design an app so that…
The bakery can easily create a menu that can be scheduled
Customers can see the menu and place their orders
Why is this needed?
Business risks losing customers
Business potentially tainting reputation
Produce inconsistent items
Lose money on missed or forgotten orders
Customers feel dissatisfied
Customer orders are becoming lost or forgotten about
Orders become delayed
Apologize to customers regularly
Employees feel overwhelmed
Not all employees are aware of upcoming orders, leading to future confusions
Struggle to quickly get in touch with other employees to gain context on the order
Scramble to whip up their order as fast as possible
Solutions and Hypothesized Impact
Reduced number of ways to place order from 4 to 1
This reduces this risk of losing or forgetting any orders
Increased regular and consistent documentation of orders
Allowing the team to be on the same page at all times
Increased number of satisfied customers
Customers can trust that their order will be taken care of as they receive regular communication about their orders
What I Learned So Far
Working with an Engineer
framing things to save time?
not to limit designs by worrying about engineer limitations during the “discovery” phase, instead focus on the user’s experience
Using a Project Planning Tool
created and completed user stories
understood where myself and the team stood on their daily and weekly tasks
